International Conference – Warsaw, 6-7th May 2015, BUW (University Library) Dobra Street, room 256
We are pleased to announce the first program close-up for the conference ‘Film and Media Education in Poland and the world- systemic solutions and case studies’ within the Audiovisual Film and Media Education Programme (PEAM)- carried out as an initiative of the University of Warsaw since 2012. By exchanging of professional experiences with our guests from other countries we are aiming at development of optimal formula for film and media education in Poland. This goal is particularly important as we are facing dynamic changes in all the dimensions of public life and thus, the ability of critical analysis of media - where film is holding finest position – has become indispensable.
The first part of the conference will be under the theme of local initiatives in the field of film education. Speeches and presentations will be delivered by Bernard McCloskey from Northern Ireland and Nuria Aidelman from Barcelona - the world leaders in this field, as well as Roger Dunscombe from Australia and dr Marcin Skorek from Tychy, winner of the Polish Film Institute Prize.
Subsequent panel will discuss educational experience film festivals from European countries at large, but also from Dubai where this form of activity has recently been developed.
The next day will be utterly devoted to authoring programs which is key aspect of ‘creative teaching’. Presentations will be delivered by Ian Wall, the winner of two BAFTAs for achievements in film education, Wojtek Lorenc from University of Hawaii, Pavel Bendarik from Czech Republic and Torben Larsen from Denmark.
In a separate panel our guests from Lebanon, Pakistan and Ukraine will be addressing the role of film and media education in the times of elevated war tension.
On the evening of 6th May, the Ad Arte will present a series of short films directed by children.
The conference programme has been prepared by dr Krzysztof Kopczyński and Joanna Wendorff-Østergaard. The conference will be held in English (interpreters assistance will be possible).
Sessions are open to all interested listeners. We are waiting for you!

Audiovisual and Media Education Programme (PEAM)
The purpose, objectives and rationale behind the peam programme
The introduction of the Audiovisual and Media Education Programme which combines resources available in Poland with analytical traditions, the newest multimedia and e-learning technologies (meeting the criteria for Open Educational Resources) and which acknowledges the status of the media participant as a creative agent in the process of interactive education, has been an important goal for the Polish education market in the years 2012-2022. Reaching this aim will change the rules governing this market; it will increase the efficiency of gaining knowledge and skills and lead towards the behavioral changes in the network and other media. It will also change the rules of the social communication in Poland as well as the communication of the Polish people with the outside world.
At a deeper level, achieving the goal will strengthen the media participants in their efforts to seek spirituality, naming values and convictions as well as understanding of their own, the group’s and social identity.
The numerous and valuable initiatives concerning audiovisual and media education as well as the emerging reports on this issue (among others: A Digital future. Media and Information Education in Poland - opening report, Film education in Polish schools. Based on the views of teachers participating in the workshop ‘Film Archive School’, The catalouge of media and information competences) indicate the need for:
- Conducting a comprehensive research on the state of competences and audiovisual and media education as well as the research on the use of media and audiovisual means at all levels of education in Poland – done on representative samples;
- creating a comprehensive and open programme for the audiovisual (media) education and the programme for the use of media and audiovisual means at all levels of education.
Although there are few studies done on representative samples, there is a common belief, that the state of the art addressed in point 1 is not satisfactory (and even critical), the educational tools at use are anachronic and inadequate to the rapidly changing vision of the world and to the needs of a modern man - a participant of the media, and finally the teachers and lecturers – unable to keep up with the media still in progress.
It should be emphasized at this point that the above mentioned problem can be found in many countries and there are attempts to solve it (eg. in 2012 on the German market 200 million euros will be allocated only to e-learning). Therefore, our first activity will be to organize a conference to be held on November 23rd, 2013: Film and media education in the world and in Poland - new opportunities and case studies.
